City Update

Edinburgh is a city of atmospheric haar and Gothic charm, but let’s be honest: that charm wears thin when you’re power-walking through a pitch-black park, clutching your keys like a DIY Wolverine. For too long, our green spaces have felt less like "urban oases" and more like the set of a low-budget horror flick once the sun dips.

Edinburgh’s Infrastructure: A Victorian Soul with a Digital Pulse

Edinburgh’s infrastructure is a bit like a classic tailor-made suit that’s been patched with neon duct tape. We’re a city built on 19th-century ambition, currently trying to squeeze a 21st-century "smart city" into a footprint designed for horse-drawn carriages and steam trains.

The poster child for this struggle is, inevitably, the North Bridge. This Category A-listed titan has been shrouded in scaffolding for what feels like a geological epoch. The good news? As of early 2026, the northbound traffic is flowing again, and the painstaking restoration of its cast-iron façade is nearing the home stretch. It’s a £60+ million reminder that maintaining a UNESCO World Heritage skyline isn't cheap—or fast.

On the flip side, our digital infrastructure is sprinting ahead. While we might groan about the potholes, our data is flying; Edinburgh now boasts 86% full-fibre (FTTP) coverage, with a staggering 96% of the city enjoying gigabit-capable speeds. We might be sitting in traffic, but at least we can stream 4K video while we wait.

The next big leap is the South East Tram extension. With the public consultation for the Granton-to-BioQuarter line wrapped up, 2026 is the year the Council presents the Strategic Business Case. At an estimated cost of up to £2.9 billion, it’s a massive gamble on our "20-minute neighbourhood" dream—aiming to ensure that almost every resident is within a short dander of essential services.

Infrastructure in Auld Reekie is always a balancing act: preserving the "Athens of the North" while trying not to become a museum that doesn't function. We’re getting there, one tram track and fibre optic cable at a time.

Edinburgh’s Parks: More Than Just a Pretty Space

Edinburgh often wears its "Green City" crown with a touch of smugness, and frankly, with 49% of our total area dedicated to green space, we’ve earned the right. We officially have more trees per person than any other UK city—which is lovely for our lungs, even if it makes finding your car on a leafy suburban street feel like a round of GeoGuessr.

In 2025, the city cemented its status as a horticultural heavyweight by securing 38 Green Flag awards, more than any other Scottish local authority. Whether it’s the manicured perfection of Princes Street Gardens (where the floral clock remains the ultimate tourist magnet) or the windswept, "don't-wear-a-skirt" heights of Holyrood Park, we are genuinely spoiled for choice. The statistics tell a story of accessibility, too: under the council’s "20-minute neighbourhood" strategy, roughly 95% of residents now live within a ten-minute dander of a quality green space.

However, it’s not all pristine lawns and quiet contemplation. The Meadows remains the frontline of our parkland politics. Between the "festival fatigue" of the Fringe and the perennial battle against "BBQ scars," the 2026 Meadows Management Plan is working overtime to balance public fun with soil health. We’ve also seen a city-wide shift toward "naturalised" areas—letting the grass grow long to encourage biodiversity. While the bees are buzzing, some locals are still grumbling about the "untidy" aesthetic.

Still, when you’re standing atop the Braid Hills looking out over a city that feels more like a forest with a few Gothic spires tucked inside, it’s hard to complain. We might have a "pothole plague" on our roads, but our parks remain our saving grace.

Sanitation

Edinburgh’s Sanitation: Bins, Birds, and the Battle for the New Town

If there’s one thing that unites every Edinburgh resident, from the heights of Liberton to the shores of Leith, it’s the visceral, daily drama of our bins. We’ve spent decades engaged in a high-stakes chess match with some of the world’s most entitled seagulls, and the latest moves from the Council suggest the game is far from over.

According to the latest Keep Scotland Beautiful data from late 2025, Edinburgh has found itself in a bit of a "litter league of shame." Roughly 10.8% of our locations are now classified as "badly littered"—placing us behind our neighbours in Fife and the Borders. While our official cleanliness (LEAMS) score sits at 89.2%, it’s a slight dip from previous years, and anyone who’s walked through the Grassmarket on a Sunday morning knows that "clean" is occasionally a subjective term.

The big talking point for 2026 is the Communal Bin Review. With over 1,400 bin hubs already installed, the Council is now pivoting to the tricky World Heritage sites. In places like Lennox Street and Royal Circus, residents aren’t exactly rolling out the red carpet; in fact, over 90% of locals there are fighting tooth and nail to keep their beloved gull-proof sacks instead of communal hubs.

The good news? A "refreshed" gull-proof sack service is launching this year, promising three times the recycling capacity. Plus, with the introduction of new electric waste vehicles and a 72-hour response target for dog fouling and litter reports, the Council is clearly trying to scrub up. It’s a bold plan, but in a city where half of adults recently admitted to littering in the past year, we’ve still got plenty of work to do before we can truly call ourselves the "Athens of the North" without a hint of irony.

Roads

Edinburgh’s Roads: A Tale of Two Cities (and Many Potholes)

Edinburgh’s roads have always been a bit of a contradiction. On one hand, you have the aesthetic glory of the New Town’s setted streets; on the other, you’re navigating a minefield that would make a rally driver break a sweat. If you’ve ever felt like your morning commute was a personal test of endurance, you aren’t imagining it.

According to the latest 2026 Driving Stress Index, Edinburgh has officially clinched the silver medal for the most stressful city to drive in across the UK—trailing only behind London. We’re currently losing an average of 53 hours a year to congestion. To add insult to injury, if you’re brave enough to actually find a parking spot, expect to part with roughly 24% of your daily earnings for the privilege.

Then there’s the "pothole plague." With over 6,400 defects per 100km, we’ve firmly established ourselves as a national hotspot. It’s reached the point where the council is fielding roughly one compensation claim for every single mile of road. If your suspension hasn’t groaned at you lately, are you even driving in Auld Reekie?

The Silver Lining!!

However, there’s some fresh tarmac on the horizon. The 2026/27 Transport Capital budget has just been set at £32 million, with nearly £12 million earmarked specifically for carriageways. Major resurfacing works are finally hitting notorious stretches like Calder Road and Portobello High Street.

Furthermore, the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) is proving its worth; over 95% of vehicles entering the city centre are now compliant. Even better, the surplus income from fines—nearly £800,000 this year—is being pumped directly back into sustainable transport and air quality projects. We might still be chasing London in the stress rankings, but at least we’re doing it with cleaner air and—fingers crossed—fewer broken axles.

How do you think the city should spend that surplus LEZ income—more bike lanes or better road surfaces?

Edinburgh: Finally Stepping Out of the Shadows

Edinburgh is a city of atmospheric haar and Gothic charm, but let’s be honest: that charm wears thin when you’re power-walking through a pitch-black park, clutching your keys like a DIY Wolverine. For too long, our green spaces have felt less like "urban oases" and more like the set of a low-budget horror flick once the sun dips.

The numbers back up the "creep factor." A recent council-backed survey revealed that a staggering 76–80% of respondents—predominantly women and girls—have experienced harassment or felt unsafe in the city's public spaces. Nationally, the "walking gap" is just as stark; roughly 39% of women in Scotland admit they’d walk more at night if our paths weren’t shrouded in Victorian-era gloom. When 4 in 5 women across the UK feel unsafe in parks after dark, "poor lighting" isn't just a maintenance issue—it’s a barrier to the city.

However, things are finally looking up (and getting brighter). Edinburgh has just become the first UK city to roll out a "smart" hybrid solar lighting scheme. We’re talking high-tech sensors in spots like Baronscourt Park, Hailes Quarry, and Ferniehill that stay at a dim 20% to protect the local bats, but spring to 100% the moment they detect a human.

It’s a win-win: the Council slashes grid energy use by 53%, and we get to walk the dog without needing a tactical headlamp. With Calton Hill and Braidburn Valley next on the list, the days of Edinburgh’s parks being "off-limits" after 4:00 PM in December are numbered. It’s about time our infrastructure caught up with our ambitions—because a safe city shouldn't be a luxury reserved for the daylight.

Local Scottish Election

It’s that time of year again. The cherry blossoms are out, the days are getting longer, and my letterbox is currently screaming for mercy. With the Scottish Parliamentary elections set for 7 May 2026, the Great British tradition of the "Election Leaflet Avalanche" has officially begun.

If you live anywhere between Gretna and Grampian, you’ll know the drill. You hear the familiar clack-clack of the letterbox, followed by the heavy thud of what sounds like a phone book hitting the mat. You go to investigate, hoping for a postcard or a cheeky takeaway menu, only to find three glossy versions of the same face promising you the world in 14-point font.

The Forest in My Hallway

There is a profound irony in watching political parties—all of whom, naturally, have "Green Initiatives" at the top of their manifestos—single-handedly fund the logging industry every five years. The sheer volume of paper is staggering. We’re getting:

The "Local Newspaper" Clone: You know the one. It’s designed to look like a community rag but is actually just eight pages of why the other lot are doing everything wrong.

The "Handwritten" Note: A font so carefully crafted to look like a hurried scribble from a candidate who "just happened to be in the area." (Spoiler: They weren't, and it’s a mail-merge).

The Bar Chart Special: Usually featuring a graph where a 2% lead looks like a towering skyscraper, while the opposition is relegated to a microscopic pixel at the bottom.

The Sustainability Gap

In an era where we’re all meticulously washing out yoghurt pots and debating the ethics of plastic straws, the election cycle feels like a bizarre step backward. Most of these leaflets are printed on that high-gloss, heavy-coated paper that makes you wonder if it’s even truly recyclable.

While digital campaigning is on the rise, the "doorstep presence" remains the holy grail for campaigners. But at what cost? By the time May 7th rolls around, the average Scottish household will have enough political literature to insulate a loft or, at the very least, keep a wood-burning stove going until mid-winter.

A Modest Proposal

Perhaps it’s time we moved toward a "digital-first" opt-in system? Or, heaven forbid, a single consolidated booklet sent by the Electoral Commission containing everyone’s pitch? It would certainly save the posties’ backs and spare our recycling bins from their seasonal indigestion.

Until then, I’ll be doing my civic duty: reading the bits that matter, sighing at the bits that don't, and ensuring that by the time I head to the polling station, my hallway floor is finally visible again.

Are you buried under a mountain of manifestos yet, or has your letterbox managed to survive the first wave?
